Team Expansion’s Host Missionary
Handbook
Pathways Internship 2007
Pathways is an internship program
that has been in effect for over 20 years. As we do
our best to achieve excellence in Student
Mobilization we ask that you too would read over and
become familiar with what we have decided to commit
ourselves to.
This Guidebook will define clear
expectations of what we, Team Expansion, ask and
desire of our host missionaries. It will also
include suggestions on how to host a successful
internship; these are ideas that have come straight
from our veteran host missionaries as well as
coaches and interns. Please take these suggestions
into careful consideration. This guidebook will also
give you a glimpse into what this up and coming
generation is like. We have also described what you
can expect from us as a sending and training
organization, we also describe what we expect from
you
Team Expansion’s Student
Mobilization Department exists to Excite,
Educate, Encourage, and Equip
College Students for Ministry Among Unreached People
Groups.
These are our team’s core values. We
dedicate ourselves to strive towards these values as
we see them as a reflection of Jesus Christ.
Commitment to Excellence-
Colossians 3.17-And whatever you do, whether in
word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord
Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
I will do my best at all times
according to acceptable standards.
Heart of Evangelism- Luke 19.10-
For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was
lost.
I will love lost people because God
loved me.
Relationships- Matthew 22.37-39-
Jesus replied: “’Love the Lord your God with all
your heart and with all your soul and with all your
mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment.
And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as
yourself.’
I will build a genuine relationship
with God and others
Integrity- Titus2.7-And you
yourself must be an example to them by doing good
deeds of every kind. Let everything you do reflect
the integrity and seriousness of your teaching.
I will be honest in what I say and
do.
Servant Attitude- Matthew 20.28-just
as the Son of Man did not some to be served but to
serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.
I will put the interests of others
before my own.
Team Work- 1 Thessalonians 5.11-
Therefore encourage one another and build each other
up, just as in fact you are doing.
I will respect, support and
encourage my teammates.
Pathways exists to provide
short-term trips that:
-Raise up new workers
-Launch new fields
-Support Team Expansion projects
Being in the internship “business”
for over 20 years we have seen many internships not
live up to their true potential. We have noticed a
break down in communication has been the culprit
more than once. With the desire to see God’s kingdom
grow from the fruit of our labor, we are clearly
communicating and defining the expectations that we
have for Team Expansion’s Pathways Internship.
Pray- we expect you to pray
for and with your coach and interns.
Understand- we expect you to
understand the amount of energy and preparation that
it take for you to host interns for a summer.
Plan- we expect you to have a
plan of attack to fill the time of your coach and
interns.
Budget- we expect you to set a
budget for your summer interns.
Language- we expect you to set
up Language Learning for your coach and interns.
Housing- we expect you to
arrange housing for your coach and interns.
Communicate- we expect you to
communicate effectively with your coach and interns.
Challenge- we expect you to
provide multiple ministry experiences that will
challenge your coach and interns.
Be Present- we expect you
to listen to, give attention to, and be available
for your coach and interns.
Respect- we expect you to give
respect not because your interns are fellow
believers, but also because they have chosen to come
and serve your ministry.
Coach- we expect you to utilize
your coach if one has been sent to you. Using them
as a buffer to communicate with interns. If you
haven’t been sent a coach we expect you to be the
main source of encouragement and model of servant
leadership your interns will have this summer.
Fulfill- we expect you to view
this as the best opportunity you have all year to
raise up workers for His harvest.
Here are some things that we do not
require or expect; however, we strongly suggest them
in making an internship successful. We do understand
that sometimes these suggestions may not be possible
due to culture, resources, and team makeup.
- Spend time getting to know your coach on their
set-up trip, and more time getting to know your
interns when they arrive. Share your struggles and
victories you’ve faced in ministry, share your
ministry strategies.
- Don’t take on too many projects or
responsibilities so that you are spread too thin.
- Take time to do some on-field debriefing on a
weekly basis and especially after large projects.
- Make a point to have a good one on one
conversation with each intern.
- Ask your team to invest into your interns just
as much as you are so they can feel the full love
of your entire ministry.
- If you have a coach, meet with them a couple
times a week to keep a good pulse on your team of
interns.
- Meet with the internship team once a week to
keep them updated on what is happening.
- Give them plenty of freedom with one sizable
project for the summer; let them own a piece of
the ministry.
- Spend time with your interns praying for the
nationals you are working among.
This Generation:
No, we are not saying your old.
We’re just saying there may be a generation gap, and
it’s natural.
Before you read this know that there
are always exceptions and the thing that this
generation hates the most is being labeled.
-They do not like to be put in a
box.
-Many are not self-starters, however
they are extremely talented.
-Many come from broken homes.
-They tend to have short interests
and attentions.
-They value authenticity, and know
when you are not.
-They desire mentoring.
-They love to worship, and need to
know it is not always in a musical setting.
-They have a desire to be accepted
and heard.
Expectations:
Here are a few things that we expect
you to communicate to us throughout the summer.
-If housing arrangements have been
changed.
-If major changes take place in your
summer ministry plan.
-If there are disciplinary issues
that need to be addressed.
-If there have been changes in the
security of your team.
Here are things that you can expect
from us.
-We can provide you with a coach,
upon request, if you can take four or more interns.
-We are sending well-screened and
trained coaches and interns.
-We are doing everything we can to
provide you with the number of interns you need to
make the most out of your ministry.
-That we are here to serve your
ministry and advance God’s Kingdom.
-We are committed to our Core
Values, and will do whatever it takes to see them
through.
Host Missionary Covenant
Pathways 2007
As a host missionary for the
Pathways ministry with Team Expansion, I will:
- See the Pathways team as fellow workers for
the Gospel.
- Pray for the Pathways team prior to, during,
and after their stay.
- Communicate consistently and promptly with the
coach before and during the internship.
- Prior to their arrival on the field, arrange
housing for the Pathways team and communicate the
arrangements to the coach.
- Work with the coach to establish an agenda of
what I would like to see the Pathways team
accomplish. The agenda should balance acts of
service and relationship building with nationals.
- Challenge the Pathways team to get out of
their comfort zones.
- View this time as an investment into their
future ministry and an investment into God's
Kingdom.
- Show the Pathways team a variety of ministry
experiences, even the difficult ones, and to
integrate them into my ministry whenever possible.
- Be active in the lives of the Pathways team by
sharing my testimony, strategies, dreams, goals,
and love for the nationals.
- Complete an evaluation of the internship once
it is finished.
- Hold the Pathways team to the Core Values of
Team Expansion's Student Mobilization.
