We usually update our Facebook more than this blog- sorry about that.  To see more updates on our family life please search for Wendy Gibson and Glen Gibson.  Wendy’s site has more family pictures.  Thanks!  The biggest news is that we are moving to Rocklin, CA so that Glen can teach at William Jessup University.  Wendy will continue on with Team Expansion as the Support Raising Coach and work out of Rocklin.  Melissa is completing her sophomore year at HIU.  This summer she will be on a 10 week trip to Egypt working with Sudaneese refugees.  Holly graduates on June 7th from NOHS.  She will take up teachers education at WJU in the Fall.  Julie is still doing well in Volleyball and has mixed emotions about the upcoming move and changes.  Most of the time she is thrilled.  She will be a sophomore at Whitney Hi9h School.  Gwen is doing well except for the fact that she has lost complete eyesight in one eye due to mascular degeneration.  Lorrita continues to minister at Knott Ave. Chr. Church and is doing great too.

Welcome Lisa!

Filed under: General updates — wgibson @ 2:24 pm

I want to introduce to you Lisa Hartman.  Lisa is an exchange student from Germany who will be living with us for the next ten months.  She is a very sweet girl who enjoys school and dance.  It has been fun for us to learn about German culture as she learns how to live in the U.S.  She started school yesterday, along with Holly and Julie, at North Oldham High School.  Please pray for her adjustment to the Kentucky culture as well as for all three girls to have a fantastic school year.  Pray for Holly and Julie to be a light for Jesus on their campus.

Happy Easter

Filed under: General updates — wgibson @ 1:04 pm

It is wonderful to be able to celebrate the hope we have because Christ died, was buried and is now ALIVE!  Too often in the Philippines more emphasis was placed on mourning and pentence that Hope was often neglected.  Praise the Lord with me.  We have a living God who is active in our daily lives and cares for each of us intimately.  It is exciting to be part of a team that is telling the world this good news through missionaries, national believers and  the local church.

We are having back to back Launches at Team Expansion due to so many new missionaries getting ready to go out to their perspective people groups.  Glen has also been busy setting up partnerships with other sending agencies. Plus there has been a lot of reorganization in the mobilizing department which has brought about exciting improvements for our  training department. There is an air of great expectations.  Join us in praise to God.  Also pray for those out support raising.  Unfortunately many have lost support lately due to various reasons so please pray that others will step up and support the missionaries financially and in prayer.  Thank you !

Melissa spent her spring break working hard at Panera, a 2 day trip to Big Bear with her girlfriends, and then catching the flu.  She is now back in school laboring over books, papers and projects.

Holly played Velma, a jet girl, in her high school musical Westside Story.  It was a lot of work but in the end the cast did a great job and we (the 13 Team Expansion coworkers)  could tell they were having fun with the musical.  We were pleased that inspite of the tight schedule Holly was able to maintain A’s and B’s.  Yahoo.  Now she is applying to get a job for her spare time.

Julie invests her time in school and volleyball.  Besides club volleyball, she has started to run a mile a day gearing up for High school volleyball tryouts.  She had a fun time representing Costa Rica for KUNA (Kentucky United Nations Assembly).  Yesterday her good friend Amanda was in a car accident and is now in a back brace.  I know that Julie would love it if you would pray for Amanda to heal.

Whats up

Glen arrives back tonight after aiding in solidifying a partnership with Frontiers, another mission agency.  He will then head out to the Philippines to help reconcile some issues with the team over there.

In the meantime.  Holly and Wendy are recovering from the stomach flu and a bad cold.  Melissa just bought two fish for her dorm rooms’ aquarium…I believe she calls them Baloo and ?.  They have 13 other fish living with them.  Julie has become active in the soup kitchen ministry the church is involved with and loves it.

Do Missionaries Need Training?  (aka. Why do we need a Training Department @ Team Expansion?)
A recent report of a four-year, twenty-two country study revealed that an increasing number of people are leaving the mission field for reasons that are preventable.  None of us want to see this loss—a loss of time, money and effective ministry.  The Summer 2006 issue of Paraclete Perspective used this sad trend as the backdrop of a study to research the difference between high and low retention mission organizations.  Three observations from the study have a direct bearing on Team Expansion’s training ministry.
First, high retention organizations require more pre-field training than low retention ones.  One of the reasons missionaries return from the field is that they are not properly equipped.  Our Training Department is passionate about making sure our missionaries are equipped to handle the pressures of living in a different culture and planting churches.
Second, high retention organizations do a good job of providing opportunities for the development of personnel.  One of the first things we do when a new candidate comes to “Launch” (See article below) is a training assessment.  Later in the week, we develop with each candidate a Personal Development Plan based on that assessment and their future ministry.  We continue to track the candidate to ensure that they progress through this plan during their time of pre-field preparation.  The goals is to keep our missionaries up-to-date and well equipped for the issues they will deal with on a regular basis.
Third, in high retention organizations, more emphasis is given to growth in a person’s spiritual life, the importance of an annual vacation, re-entry programs and formal debriefings during home assignments.  Spiritual formation and ministry reflection are vital for missionaries.  We are working to insure that our missionaries receive quality opportunities for processing and growth.
The goal of Team Expansion’s Training Department is to bring together Kingdom resources to equip and motivate our missionaries to be life-long learners.  As the study mentioned above indicates, this skill is vital to their long term success on the field.  (Adapted from a article written by Dan Burks, a member of our Training Department).

In honor of the Superbowl

Filed under: General updates — wgibson @ 1:42 pm

A co-worker sent this to us and I just had to put it on the blog.  Go Colts!

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Bears football practice was delayed nearly two
hours today after a player reported finding an unknown white powdery
substance on the practice field. Coach immediately suspended practice
while police and federal investigators were called to investigate.  After
a complete analysis, FBI forensic experts determined that the white
substance unknown to the players was the goal line. Practice resumed after
special agents decided the team was unlikely to encounter the substance
again…
GO COLTS !!!!

The New Year

Filed under: General updates — wgibson @ 2:11 pm

We met the new year with:

Melissa home for the holidays.  Wonderful!

19 family members outside of Kentucky visited us. A blessing.

Nine missionary candidates came for the week long Launch (training).  This will be nine more missionaries Wendy will be helping with support raising too.

Glen taught Cross Cultural Communication to 17 master students from Hope International University.

Holly tried out and got a part in her schools musical.  She has talent.

Julie began her first Club season of Volleyball.  Many times she has 3 coaches at a practice. Wow!

catching up

Filed under: General updates — wgibson @ 1:29 pm

Glen is back from the Eastern Medittaranean where he was encouraging and training some students there.  Please keep the team there in your prayers as they were visited by the local police right after he left.  The police were just intimidating, made some threats, and were inquiring about Glen’s presence.  After talking with coworkers that work in Islamic areas this interogation seems par for the course.

We are working hard on workshops and conventions that are coming up.  Please make an effort to get to the National Missionary convention if you can this Nov. 16-19 in Indianapolis, Indiana.  We are also putting on a Church Planting workshop Nov. 19-21 here in Louisville.  Please keep these endeavors in your prayers.

The family is doing well.  We praise the Lord that we have not had any illness lately and all the girls are doing well in school.  We do miss Melissa and will look forward to her Christmas visit.
