“Like much of the world), my wife and I watched as China threw a party to beat all parties at the Olympic Opening Ceremonies. I was amazed by all the wizardry, costumes, people hanging on wires, and the works. And how ’bout that refrigerator box routine? You know… the “movable type blocks” scene which everybody just assumed those 897 boxes were run by hydraulics, forming shapes of the wind, Chinese characters, ‘waves’, and “Harmony.” How’d they do it? Well the explanation I heard was 8 hours a day, solid, for 4 months. No wonder they had teamwork! What this illustrates *big-time* is that for a team of 897 to really pull off a large-scale success like this, he has to recognize he’s part of the body. Likewise, we’ll function best in the body of Christ if and when we see ourselves in perspective of the larger body. Ephesians 4. Romans 12. I Corinthians 12. Your role in helping bring about new church planting movements around the world is an important one! Your favorite Team Expansion missionary couldn’t function without your help. Ultimately, none of us can. Thank you for your support… and thanks for your prayers!”

“What brings renewal for you? For some, it’s getting away to the mountains. I tried that recently. In an effort to focus fully (on some of the questions in the item above), I took 4 days on a hilltop near Whittier, North Carolina. It was a very meaningful time of praying, reading, brainstorming, and recasting the dreams of my life and our ministry. I revisited my hopes, dreams, and daily walk, along with those of Team Expansion. I also studied carefully several of our projects around the world and became all the more convinced that God is doing some mighty work among us. Thank you for the support and prayer you extend in hopes of undergirding these projects, through the work of the favorite Team Expansion worker that you support. Please join me now in not only supporting them financially, but also in praying for their work specifically and intentionally. And thank you for the difference you’re making around the world! (More later about the outcome from the 4 days on mountaintop.).

“My wife, son and I recently watched ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End’ together for a family night. Confession: I was lost for much of the movie (it was a sequel to a movie or two that I hadn’t caught). But as the plot continued, the movie climaxed with a major showdown between pirates and their enemies. (I don’t want to give away too much of the plot. :-) ) I enjoyed hearing Elizabeth Swan passionately give a ‘call to arms’ near the end of the movie, asking her colleagues to “Hoist the colours!” In her case, it was the “skull & crossbones” flag. As I was stirred by her emotional call, I reflected on how much greater is our own call… to spread the word worldwide about a humble man who contained the Words and the Spirit of God in his fleshly body, … a man who turned redeemer and hero, … a man who was so much more, in fact, than a man. No *wonder* we travel to the four winds of the earth! No *wonder* we risk life and limb. And to you, who make possible this work, we say, thank you for providing the wind for our sails! May God bless you as we hoist the colours of our savior… the red of his shed blood and the white of his saving grace. God bless your new year!!!

Here are some photos from my birthday party this month:dsc05141.JPG

When Connie first handed me this birthday bouquet of flowers, I thought perhaps it was a very unique arrangement of flowers I had not yet seen in Ghana.  I didn’t know if they were supposed to look that way, or if something had happened to them.  Then I realized that the entire bouquet consisted of dried up, withered, and otherwise dead flowers—-a sure sign of being “over the hill.”  Actually, I like them and plan on keeping them displayed on my table.

My birthday cake.

Arnold Polk, always good for a joke and a laugh, presented me with my second-favorite birthday gift—-a walking cane complete with a sippy cup and rearview mirror.  What a hoot!

Pastor Jack, Arnold, and . . . whoops!  I forgot his name.

Gerri, Barbara, and Connie—-the three amigos!

There were more than 30 people at my birthday party, but I can’t post all of the photos here.  Anyway, it was a very special birthday celebration.
